Strategic Aims of ESC and how we fit in

The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) has just published their strategic plan 2023-2028 ahead of the annual ESC Congress.  This plans also illustrates six future scenarios that are also of relevance for our group.

The ESC stretches the following:

1. the challenge of the ageing op the population and increased multimorbidity. We observe similar challenges in primary care oriented cardiovascular medicine.

2. the future will likely hold precision medicine through increasingly refined diagnostic and therapeutic options. We align with this in our research.

3. sub specialisation shapes the professional landscape in cardiovascular medicine. In our view the cardiologist of the future would have a more holistic and general approach, instead of further sub-specialisation.

4. digital health (including digital tools, AI and big data analytics play a prominent role in medicine and research). We also believe in this concept. A famous quote in this regard is that AI won't replace doctors, but doctor who do not use AI will be replaced by those who do.

5. Emphasis on the patient perspective. We also believe that the patient is at the heart of all that we do.

6. Societal changes including evolving priorities on environmental sustainability, diversity and inclusivity should be at the heart of what we do.
